Trigger points are discrete, focal, hyperirritable spots located in a taut band of skeletal muscle. They produce pain locally and in a referred pattern and often accompany chronic musculoskeletal disorders. Acute trauma or repetitive microtrauma may lead to the development of stress on muscle fibers and the formation of trigger points.  Regional and persistent pain may result in a decreased range of motion in the affected muscles. These include muscles used to maintain body posture, such as those in the neck, shoulders, and pelvic girdle. Trigger points may also manifest as tension headache, tinnitus, temporomandibular joint pain, decreased range of motion in the legs, and low back pain. Palpation of a hypersensitive bundle or nodule of muscle fiber of harder than normal consistency is the physical finding typically associated with a trigger point. Palpation of the trigger point will elicit pain directly over the affected area and/or cause radiation of pain toward a zone of reference and a local twitch response.

Thai herbal ball ingredients include:

  • Ginger – the herbal compress uses zedoary, prai, and tumeric. Ginger has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. The anti-inflammatory properties of ginger help to lower prostaglandin, a chemical in the body responsible for pain and inflammation. Lemongrass relieves swelling and reduces fevers. It also has antioxidant properties and has a fragrant citrusy smell.

  • Kaffir Lime the high dose of vitamin C in the lime strengthens the immune system and helps to clear skin irritations.

Tip: Breathing in the scents of lemongrass and kaffir lime helps you to relax more. A more relaxed you means a much less tense body the therapist has to work with.

  • Tamarind leaves also have anti-inflammatory properties and help to heal wounds faster. Tamarind leaves have an exfoliating effect as well, giving your skin a refreshed and glowing look.

  • Mangosteen has antioxidant properties and is rich in tannins. Tannins are natural compounds found in fruit and vegetables that help heal skin or irritation such as eczema.

Other items may include cinnamon, camphor(oil or powder), essential oils (peppermint, eucalyptus, sandalwood or similar), orange peel, and sweet basil. These also have medicinal properties but are added for the scent and aromatherapy effect. Salt and rice powder are also added to act as a preservative and binder.

 

How long are the treatment sessions?

 A Thai herbal Ball massage usually lasts 60 minutes. Some sessions can extend to 90 minutes.

Why does a session take that long?

 Thai herbal ball massage aims to do 2 things: 1) To bring relief to tired, stiff muscles. 2) To rebalance the qi in the body. A shorter session will not be able to achieve the two and would be an unsatisfactory experience.

How often should I get a Thai herbal ball massage? 

This Depends on how tight or sore the muscles are. It’s recommended to get a Thai herbal ball massage at least once a month. Some even recommend every 2 weeks to start followed by once a month maintenance massages.

What should I wear during the treatment? 

Massage would be uncomfortable with clothing on. It is best if you remove your clothes. The therapists are professionals and will cover you up. Wear something loose-fitting if you’re not comfortable taking off your clothes during the massage.

What can I expect during a Thai herbal ball massage session? 

The aim of a Thai herbal ball massage is to bring you relief and relaxation. It is important to tell your therapist if the heat is too much or not enough. The same also applies with the pressure of the massage.

Can I eat before or after a Thai herbal ball massage session? 

A light meal before or after your session is allowed. If you get easily nauseated, as some do with scents, avoid taking anything. Water is encouraged to help flush out and drain the lymph and toxins after the massage.
